Lexmark Plaza 2

(Lexmark Plaza 2)

March 25,2008. It was my second day in LRDC. I was to continue with my orientation for half the day and then be endorsed to my mentor by the later half. So, after I had lunch, I went back to the 8th floor of Innove building where the HRD offices where located. I was to be escorted by miss Maricelle Era (Mera for short) to my mentor and immediate supervisor. Finally I was going to get hands on experience.

I was to be assigned to the Printing Solutions and Services Department (PS&SD). Their offices are located at the new Lexmark building named Lexmark Plaza 2. So from the 8th floor of innove building, miss Mera and I went down to the lobby, crossed the street, and then entered Lexmark Plaza 2. My mentor was in the 4th floor so we went there. This was my first time to see Engineer Alexander Mira-ato in person. I was kinda disappointed by his height though. I imagined him to be a bit taller. Anyway, after our introductions miss Mera left. Sir Alex then gave me a quick tour around the Laboratories inside Lexmark plaza 2. After that, he went to get the equipments I needed and he showed me the 5th floor color lab - the lab where I will be staying. It was a wide lab. There was still nothing much inside it. The lab was clearly not yet in use. I had my cubicle at the corner near the window. It was cold inside to. Temperature ranged from around 22 degrees centigrade to a cold 17 degrees centigrade (a far cry from 29 degress which was the temperature outside when it was a cool day). It was much colder to think that for the mean time, I was to be alone inside the lab.

So after showing me the lab, my cubicle and my things, sir Alex then gave me a bit of an orientation on what it was like working in the printing solutions and services department. And after that he talked to me about embedded systems and firmware as applied to the printer products of Lexmark. It was a very enlightening experience. That was my first time to see how some printer products function from the inside.

Not long after that, sir Alex then started teaching me the basics of embedded design. He let me study a starter kit from Renesas and from there I was to learn the firmware too. It was a bit hard at first because I had no prior experience whatsoever on embedded systems and Micro-controller Units (MCUs) in particular. I found it fun though, learning about MCUs and firmware. After all, I wanted to prove myself worthy of being chosen. I wasn't about to disappoint them.

The week dragged on with nothing much to do. I'd wake up in the morning, have breakfast, go to LP2, study MCUs, have lunch, study MCUs more and then went to the dorm, have dinner then sleep. It was boring and very routine. I deeply wished I had friends there with me. I'd see Jobert and his friends hang out and feel jealous. I was still very shy and had no guts to approach them. It was a long way before Monday when my colleague Sybil would come for the training too. I felt very empty that time.
